This is my declaration of credibility! Oh sure, I can check all the boxes. I have the typical accoutrements expected of a credentialed business leader: MBA, decades at big name brands (including The Coca-Cola Company and Victoria's Secret), author of PERSUADED and ENTREPRENEURing, accomplished team leader and manager of big successful projects. I am a motivated self-starter with a strong desire to learn… blah, blah, blah.
And none of that, or almost none of that, has helped me with entrepreneuring. In fact, I’ve had to unlearn most of the garbage I was taught to make me a good employee. Because I am not an employee. I am an owner.
I learned how to be an entrepreneur by entrepreneuring. Doing and failing. Improving. Failing again. And improving some more. Step by step, inch by inch, I learned the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur. And I’ve loved (almost) every minute of it.
I love entrepreneuring because I am an entrepreneur. It is my calling. And I love helping others find their calling.
Six years ago I launched 39 Consulting, LLC, a strategic brand marketing advisory. About a year later, people started connecting with me to learn how to turn their big ideas into viable businesses. Quite literally, about once a week, I would meet with a bright and impressive person with a bright and impressive idea.
These conversations would go the exact same way. My lunch companion would say, “I have this idea and I want to start my own business, but I don’t know where to begin or what to do.”
I would then ask them the same 10 questions: “What’s your idea?” “Does your idea solve a problem?” “Who wants your solution?” “Are there alternatives to your solution?” “Does your business have a name?” “Do you have a website?” “Have you incorporated?” “Do you have a business plan?” “Do you have a marketing plan?” “Do you have the funding you need to launch?”
The truth is, I never got to the tenth question. In fact, I rarely got past the website question.
So, I would then walk these intelligent, ambitious people through my step by step process to launch their businesses. They would take copious notes and then go on their merry way. And I would never hear from them again.
Until one day, I had a second lunch with a gentleman that I had met with a few years prior. We went through the exact same conversation that we had the first time. He was really motivated to launch his business but had gotten overwhelmed and lost focus sometime after his first attempt.
That’s when it hit me: people don’t want me to explain what to do, they want me to help them do it... step by step. Together.
That is when I began working on the Launching Your Business course and that is exactly what it is designed to do: inform, encourage and support. I want to keep you on track. And, ultimately, I want you to successfully launch your startup.
Not just because this is my calling, but because I want you to find your calling.
